Congratulations to CEPR Researchers Julia Cagé and David Yanagizawa-Drott, who were awarded the 2025 Yrjö Jahnsson Award in Economics. Established in 1993, the biennial award recognises a European economist or economists who have made significant contributions to theoretical and applied research in economics in Europe.

Julia Cagé is a Professor of Economics at Sciences Po Paris. She is a Research Fellow in the Economic History, Industrial Organization, Political Economy, and Public Economics programme areas and the leader of CEPR’s Research Policy Network on Media Plurality. Alongside this, she serves as co-director of the Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Evaluation of Public Policies (LIEPP)’s 'Evaluation of Democracy' research group. Julia is particularly interested in media economics, political participation, and political attitudes, and has already authored three books on the subject.

David Yanagizawa-Drott is a Professor of Economics at the University of Zurich. He is a Fellow in the Development Economics and Political Economy programme areas and a member of the CEPR Research Policy Networks on Artificial Intelligence and Preventing Conflict: Policies for Peace. David is also an affiliated professor at the UBS Center and the director of the LRF Center. Additionally, he serves as an Associate Editor on several academic journal editorial boards. His research interests include development economics and political economy, with a focus on understanding the drivers of culture and norms in shaping labour markets for men and women, the role of social media and artificial intelligence in society, and health care in developing countries.

The award committee praised Julia and David for their advancements in the study of political economy and media. Through extensive historical research on France, the USA, and Africa, their work has highlighted the crucial influence of media, including social media, in shaping political beliefs and actions, as well as the risks of media control.
