Herman Vollebergh is Senior Fellow of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, Research Fellow of the Tinbergen Institute, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Visiting Research Fellow of the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment from Oxford University, having previously been Assistant Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His main research work is in environmental and public economics. He is particularly interested in how the use of market based incentive mechanisms, like taxation, subsidies and tradeable permits, affect behaviour of agents, like firms or households.
Much of his research has an empirical focus including his recent research on the identification of reduced form relationships, such as the Environmental Kuznets Curve, the role of corruption in environmental policy implementation, and the effect of environmental policy on technological change. Finally, he is strongly involved in applying his academic work to the policy community including the OECD, European Union and the Dutch government.
