Homi Kharas

Senior Fellow in Global Economy and Development at Brookings Institution

Homi Kharas is a Senior Fellow in Global Economy and Development at The Brookings Institution in Washington DC. He is a Non-Resident Fellow of the OECD Development Center; and a member of the National Economic Advisory Council to the Malaysian Prime Minister. He was a member of the Working Group for the Commission on Growth and Development, chaired by Professor A. Michael Spence. Previously, Homi served as Chief Economist for the World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific region and as Director for Poverty Reduction and Economic Management, Finance and Private Sector Development, responsible for the Bank’s advice on structural and economic policies, fiscal issues, debt, trade, governance and financial markets. In 1990-91, he was a Senior Partner with Jeff Sachs and Associates, advising governments in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union on transition. His research interests are now focused on global trends, East Asian growth and development, and international aid for the poorest countries. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.
