James Banks is Professor of Economics at the University of Manchester and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Fiscal Studies. His research looks at empirical models of household spending behaviour, intertemporal consumption patterns, savings, pensions, retirement and household asset holding. In addition, recent work has looked at a number of broader issues in the economics of ageing, such as the links between health, disability, labour market outcomes and socioeconomic position at older ages, cognitive function and savings trajectories, and the nature of expectations of retirement and longevity. Professor Banks is also Co-Principal Investigator of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and collaborates closely with major ageing studies in the US, Europe and Asia.
