Kazuyuki Motohashi is a professor at the Department of Technology Management for Innovation (TMI) School of Engineering, University of Tokyo and a faculty fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI). Prior to his current position, he was an associate professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo (2004-2006); associate professor at the Institute of Innovation Research, Hitotsubashi University and senior manager of Quantitative Studies and senior fellow at RIETI (2002-2004); head of the Public Affairs Office, Trade Policy Bureau, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) (1999-2000); deputy director of the Planning Division, SME Agency (1998-1999); economist at the Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry, OECD (1995-1998).He joined METI in 1986 and specialized in computer policy, industrial policy, and energy policy. He earned his Ph.D. in Business and Commerce from Keio University, an MBA from Cornell University, and a Master of Engineering from the University of Tokyo.
His research interest covers a broad range of issues in economic and statistical analysis of innovation, including economic impacts of information technology, international comparison of productivity, national innovation system focusing on science and industry linkages and SME innovation and entrepreneurship policy. He has published numerous papers in academic journals, including Research Policy, International Journal of Technology Management and Journal of Asian Economics. He has also published and edited a significant number of books such as Global Business Strategy: Multinational Corporations Venturing into Emerging Markets (Springer) and Productivity in Asia, Economic Growth and Competitiveness (Edward Elgar).
