I am a professor of Financial Economics at the University of Magdeburg, a Vice President at the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) and head of the Financial Markets department, host to the annual Conference on Challenges to Financial Stability. My research concerns primarily empirical work on the interaction between financial institutions and systems, regulation, politics, and the real economy. Some projects received funding by science foundations, such as DFG, NWO, and Leibniz, and appeared in both general interest and field journals, such as the Journal of Monetary Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and others. The Utrecht University conferred my PhD degree after undergraduate education at the University of Maastricht. Before joining IWH, I was a professor at Frankfurt School of Finance and Management and the University of Groningen. Currently, I also serve as a member of the scientific advisory board of the Research Data and Service Center of Deutsche Bundesbank, as an editor at the Economics of Transition and Institutional Change (ETIC), and as an associate editor of the Journal of Financial Stability. I consult(ed) regularly central banks and served as the President of the IBEFA association in the recent past. Occasionally, my research is featured in public media and I twitter irregularly at @koetter_michael.
