Monika Schnitzer holds a Chair in Comparative Economics at LMU Munich since 1996. Her research interests are in the areas of innovation, competition policy and industrial organization, multinational firms and international trade. Her work has been published in journals such as American Economic Review, American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, Rand Journal of Economics, Journal of the European Economic Association, European Economic Review, Economic Journal, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Industrial Economics, and International Journal of Industrial Organization. Monika Schnitzer received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Bonn in 1991. She has been a Visiting Academic at Boston University, MIT, Stanford University, Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University. Since 2020, Monika Schnitzer is a member and since 2022 she is the Chairwoman of the German Council of Economic Experts (Sachverständigenrat zur Begutachtung der gesamtwirtschaftlichen Entwicklung). Since 2001, she has served on the Council of Economic Advisors of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy in Germany. From 2011 – 2019, she was Deputy Chairwoman of the Commission of Experts for Research and Innovation for the German Federal Government. From 2004 till 2006 and again since 2020, she was/is a member of the Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy, Competition DG, of the European Commission. From 2003 till 2007, she was a member of the Council of the European Economic Association. From 2015 – 2016 she was President of the Verein für Socialpolitik (Association of German speaking economists). In 2008 she was elected a member of the Bavarian Academy of Science and in 2022 she was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
