I am a development economist, currently based in Oxford. I hold a joint position (equivalent to tenure-track Assistant Professor) between the Oxford Department of International Development, and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS). At OCIS, I am also the Investment Bursar, responsible for overseeing management of the endowment fund. In Oxford, I am also an Associate Member of the Department of Economics, and affiliated with the Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE) and Pembroke College. I completed my PhD at the Department of Economics, University of Oxford (St. John's College), followed by a post-doctoral research fellowship (JRF) at Pembroke College until 2020. I have also completed postgraduate degrees in finance (LSE), economics (Cambridge), and development economics (Oxford). In my research, I am interested in the effect of equity-like financial contracts — involving, for example, shared ownership of assets or income sharing — on the investment and growth of small firms. I have conducted fieldwork in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, and Pakistan. Prior to academia I worked in financial markets for five years, for Bank of America in London and Deutsche Bank in Singapore, where I traded European and Asian government bonds, foreign exchange derivatives and other fixed-income products.
