Sayuri Shirai

Visiting Scholar to ADB Institute at Asian Development Bank, Professor at Keio University

Dr. Sayuri Shirai is currently a professor of Keio University and also a visiting scholar at the Asian Development Bank Institute. She was a Member of the Policy Board of the Bank of Japan (BOJ) from April 2011 to March 2016, who is responsible for making policy decisions. She worked as Professor of Economics at Keio University before becoming a board member at BOJ. She also taught at Science-Po in France in 2007-08. She was formally an Economist at the International Monetary Fund (1993-98). She graduated from Keio University and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University. She is the author of numerous articles in professional journals and published many books on monetary policues, Japanese economies, China’s exchange rate system, macroeconomic policy, IMF policy, European debt crisis, etc. The most recent book (in Japanese) published in 2017 was about Japanese Economy after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She published an e-book entitled Mission Incomplete – Reflating Japan’s Economy in English (Second Edition 2018). She often makes comments for Bloomberg, CNBC, Channel News Asia, and many Japanese TV programs and newspapers on Japanese economy and monetary policy.
