Thomas Rutherford

Thomas F. Rutherford has been Chair of Energy Economics in the Center for Energy Policy and Economy (Department of Management, Technology and Economics) since January, 2008. His major research interests include energy-economy modeling, climate policy analysis and computational economics. He was born on June 7, 1955 in Indiana, USA. He obtained a B.S. in Engineering and Applied Science from Yale University in 1977 and a PhD in Operations Research from Stanford University in 1987 (under the supervision of Alan S. Manne). He subsequently worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow at Yale's Cowles Foundation, and he was Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Colorado where he was promoted to Full Professor in 2001. Professor Rutherford's main research areas concern the formulation and analysis of computational economic equilibrium models. Many of these areas of analysis relate to energy policy issues, particularly climate policy, a core area of research in CEPE. He has also published papers based on computational economics applications in economics, ranging from international trade to health economics.
