Alberto Giovannini 1955 - 2019

CEPR is very sad to announce the death of Alberto Giovannini. Alberto was appointed a Research Fellow in the IM programme in 1986, and went on to lead that programme as PD in the early 1990s. He had great enthusiasm for the mission of CEPR and combined intellectual gravity with enormous energy and a positive outlook that he communicated to all. He had an impressive set of academic and policy outputs, and was also extremely influential in financial markets: he was Head of the Italian Debt Office in the early 1990s; chaired the Giovannini Group on Cross-border Clearing and Settlement Arrangements in the EU, which was established by the European Commission in 1996; and was a member of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board from its inception in 2011.

Francesco Giavazzi and Richard Portes have written a tribute to his work on VoxEU that can be found here: Alberto Giovannini 1955-2019
