The Programme organizes two annual symposia:

  • The Joint Workshop on Incentives, Management and Organization (IMO) and Entrepreneurship (ENT)

The European Summer Symposium in Economic Theory (ESSET) is one of the key annual events for economic theorists. It has been held at the Studienzentrum Gerzensee, Switzerland, each July since 1992. The meeting is organised by CEPR at the Studienzentrum Gerzensee (a foundation of the Swiss National Bank). It runs for two weeks, in the form of a large-scale workshop with sub-workshops. ESSET is a very prominent event in the economic theory community. Each of the two weeks is centred on a one-day workshop that focuses on a particular topic, which changes every year. At least two leading theorists are invited to organise a total of two workshops (focus sessions) that represent the background themes for that year's conference. The topics are chosen by the organisers so as to focus the presentations and discussion at the conference on topics that represent the frontier of current research in economic theory. The remaining days are characterised by a seminar presentation in the morning and one in the afternoon. This structure of the conference fosters joint work, collaboration and discussion among conference participants during the week, exploiting the outstanding facilities of the Centre. In selecting the academics invited to the conference and the papers presented, the organisers give priority to high quality papers submitted by young European economists.

Since 2017, the Joint IMO/ENT Workshop brings together researchers from the annual workshop on "Incentives, Management and Organization" and the annual "Economics of Entrepreneurship" workshop. The joint workshop includes joint plenary sessions as well as separate parallel sessions and keynote speeches in both areas. The next joint workshop will take place at STICERD, LSE on 19-20 September 2019.

The Incentives, Management and Organisation workshop series brings together researchers interested in studying the internal economics of firms and other organisations. It covers areas such as organisational economics, personnel economics, management and productivity, incentives and contracts, bounded rationality, and behavioural economics. 

The Economics of Entrepreneurship Workshop brings together researchers interested in studying entrepreneurship. We welcome submissions related to incentives promoting entrepreneurship, relevant program evaluations, entrepreneurship and institutions, financing entrepreneurship (venture capital/business angels), experimentation and entrepreneurship, job creation and entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship in the theory of the firm, and entrepreneurship from an industrial organisation perspective.
