The CEPR Media Plurality Research and Policy Network (RPN) invites you to the 8th session of the Media Plurality Webinar Series, which will be held on Tuesday, 1 April 2025, at 5 PM (CEST), 4 PM (BST), 11 AM (EDT).

This session will feature Professor Philine Widmer (PSE), who will present her latest paper, “The Political Effects of X's Recommender Algorithm” (co-authored with Germain Gauthier, Roland Hodler, and Ekaterina Zhuravskaya). Drawing on a large-scale field experiment, Philine's work examines the effects of Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on user engagement and political beliefs. Their findings reveal that switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed not only increases engagement but also nudges users toward more conservative positions.

Following Philine’s presentation, we will discuss her research’s policy implications with Jean-Lou Fourquet, author of “The Dictatorship of Algorithms” (Éditions Tallandier). At the end, we will also hold an interactive Q&A session led by Professor Julia Cagé (Sciences Po and CEPR), leader of our RPN.
