Heroes and Villains: The Effects of Combat Leadership on Collaboration in War-Time France

Pauline Grosjean, University of New South Wales presented “Heroes and Villains: The Effects of Combat Leadership on Collaboration in War-Time France” with Julia Cage (Sciences Po Paris and CEPR), Anna Dagorret (Stanford GSB) and Saumitra Jha (Stanford GSB). The paper analyses how rotating regiments who came under the leadership of General Philippe Pétain during the battle of Verdun in WW1 were more likely to support the Pétain-led Vichy regime, join fascist political parties or paramilitary groups and collaborate with the Nazis in WW2.
