Interdependence and European Macro Policy

The last in the current series of Anglo/French workshops on this subject was held on 26/27 March, organized by International Macroeconomics Programme Director Marcus Miller. Financial support for the series was provided by the Economic and Social Research Council and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. Highlights of the meeting included presentations by

  • Jacques Melitz on German monetary discipline and the EMS.

  • Daniel Laskar on whether open economies need conservative central bankers.

  • Daniel Cohen and Philippe Michel on how central bankers can achieve popularity, at least in the long run.

  • Andrew Hughes Hallett on the effects of model uncertainty on the gains from policy coordination.

The workshop concluded with a roundtable discussion of the ending of exchange controls and the width of EMS margins. Further information on the workshop can be obtained from Marcus Miller through CEPR.
