A volume of research prepared as a CEPR joint project with the Commission of the European Communities on `Economic, Social and Political Transformation in Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland' was published on 5 May. In these papers, leading economists from the region assess their countries' progress in economic transformation since 1989 and the prospects for their continued growth and integration into the world economy. This volume was launched at a CEPR joint discussion meeting with the Commission of the European Communities in London on 4 May, addressed by Richard Portes, Director of CEPR and Professor of Economics at Birkbeck College, London, and Joan Pearce, Head of Unit for Eastern Europe in the Directorate for International Economic and Financial Affairs, Commission of the European Communities.
