On 30 November CEPR held a workshop at the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels on the EMS. The workshop featured:

Francesco Giavazzi (Università di Bologna and CEPR) `Monetary Convergence and Fiscal Divergence'
Charles Wyplosz (INSEAD and CEPR) `Asymmetry and Hegemony in the EMS'
Stefano Vona (Banca d'Italia) `Trade Imbalances'
The speakers are all contributors to The European Monetary System, edited by Francesco Giavazzi, Stefano Micossi and Marcus Miller. This volume was published by Cambridge University Press, and arose out of a conference organized by CEPR with the Banca d'Italia and the Italian research network STEP. The discussion at the workshop focused on the key problems illuminated in that volume.
A paperback edition of The European Monetary System will be published in July. The appearance of the paperback will make this volume an even more attractive choice for graduate reading lists.
A further volume, A European Central Bank? Perspectives on Monetary Unification after Ten Years of the EMS, edited by Marcello de Cecco and Alberto Giovannini, will be published in hardback and paperback by Cambridge University Press for CEPR and the Italian Macroeconomic Policy Group in April.
Both volumes are available from CUP on 0223 325970 (24-hour order service) or from Customer Service Department, Cambridge University Press, The Edinburgh Building, Shaftesbury Road, Cambridge, CB2 2RU, UK.
