Post-war Growth in Europe

A workshop on `Institutions and Growth: Issues in Post-War Europe' took place at the Banca d'Italia, Rome, on 17/18 June. The workshop formed part of the Centre's research programme on `Comparative Experience of Economic Growth in Postwar Europe' and was organized by Nick Crafts, Professor of Economic History at the University of Warwick and Gianni Toniolo, Professor of Economics at the Università degli Studi di Venezia, Research Fellows in CEPR's Human Resources programme. The following papers were presented:

`Alternative Models of Control: Efficiency, Accessibility and Market Failures', Fabrizio Barca (Banca d'Italia)

`Corporate Governance in Historical Perspective: Suggested Interpretations', Magda Bianco and Sandro Trento (Banca d'Italia)

`Empirical Evidence on Corporate Governance: The Case of Italy', (summary of major findings of two reports prepared by 14 authors from the Banca d'Italia, Consob and the Politecnico di Milano)

`Human Capital and Productivity in Manufacturing During the Twentieth Century: Britain, Germany and the United States', Steve Broadberry (University of Warwick and CEPR) and Karin Wagner (Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung)

The workshop also included a discussion to review the results of the research programme, identify emergent themes and define a new research agenda.
