What really governs your choice of school?

Simon Burgess of Bristol University discusses findings taken from Department of Education data on applications for state schools in the UK. Public perception is that most parents pick local schools, but the data shows that for half of all applications the nearest school does not feature in any of the top 3 selection slots. For all the tactics involved in parental selection though, the key factor in successful application to an oversubscribed school will still be how close to it you can afford to live.
