François Gerard is a Professor of Economics at University College London and the Research Director of the Center for Tax Analysis in Developing Countries (TaxDev) at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).
His primary research interests lie at the intersection of Public Economics and Development Economics. His work studies questions related to social insurance, taxation, inequality, and the correction of externalities in low- and middle-income countries. It has been published in leading economic journals such as the American Economic Review, the Journal of Political Economy, the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, the Journal of Development Economics, and Quantitative Economics.
François received his PhD in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley and began his academic career in the Department of Economics at Columbia University and Queen Mary University of London.
François is an Associate Editor at the Journal of the European Economic Association. He is also an Affiliate of BREAD (Bureau for Research and Economic Analysis of Development), a Research Affiliate of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a Research Associate of the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) and a Research Affiliate of the International Growth Centre (IGC).
