Senior expert, Monetary policy, exchange rate policy of the euro area, ERM II and euro adoption at European Commission

Matteo Salto works at the European Commission (DG ECFIN). He is currently Senior Expert with the unit working on Monetary Policy, exchange rates and access to euro. Previously, he was Deputy Head of the unit working on Fiscal Policy, where he was the editor of the Public Finances in EMU Report (between 2011 and 2017) and has been working at the 2011 reform of the Stability and Growth Pact and at its implementation until 2017. With the EU Commission since 2000, he has been working on equilibrium exchange rates, at the first version of what has become the scoreboard used in the context of the Macroeconomic Imbalances Procedure and on France in DG ECFIN and on state aid in DG COMP where he contributed to the work for the transition towards a more economic-based approach. He owns a PhD from CORE, Universithé Catholique de Louvain on real effects of exchange rate policies (supervisor H. Polemarchakis), and a degree In Economic and Social Studies with Bocconi University, Milan (final work on growth and innovation in endogenous growth models, supervisor F. Malerba). His publications are mainly in the fields of exchange rate issues, fiscal policy, monopolistic competition and trade optimality.
