Minouche Shafik

President at Columbia University

On July 1, 2023, Minouche Shafik became the 20th president of Columbia University, the first woman since its founding in the year 1754. Previously she served as the President and Vice Chancellor of the London School of Economics from September 2017 to June 2023. She has also been Deputy Governor for Markets and Banking at the Bank of England, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, the Financial Policy Committee and the Board of the Prudential Regulation Authority. The defining feature of her work is managing the balance sheet of the central bank at the heart of the leading global financial centre. At this intersection of policymaking and implementation, she is responsible for the design and execution of quantitative easing, and for catalysing reforms to promote the effectiveness of financial markets more broadly. She co-chaired the Fair and Effective Markets Review and led the implementation of reforms to the Bank’s Sterling Monetary Framework, alongside the ongoing modernisation of the UK’s high value payments system.
