Discussion paper
Noel Johnson is an Associate Professor of Economics at George Mason University. He is also a Research Fellow at the Mercatus Center and a faculty member at the Center for Study of Public Choice . His research interests focus on the historical origins of modern economic growth. Noel's recent research has focused on questions such as, "how do states build administrative and fiscal capacity?" and "how has the disease environment and climate affected economic and social outcomes under dierent institutional settings?" His work is published in outlets such as the Economic Journal, the Journal of Economic Growth, and the Journal of Development Economics. He recently published a book (with Mark Koyama) on the rise of religious freedom in the West---Persecution and Toleration: The Long Road to Religious Freedom. He received his Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and his BA from Kenyon College.
