Steven Nafziger's research draws on archival and statistical sources to analyze the impact of institutional and political factors on pre-Soviet Russian economic development. Current research projects investigate the long-run effects of Russian serfdom, the roles of local government in absolutist states, and the evolution of inequality prior to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.
