Yasuo Tanabe

Managing Director, EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation and Consulting Fellow at Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI)

Yasuo Tanabe is the Managing Director of the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation and a Consulting Fellow at the Research Institute of Economy, Trade and Industry (RIETI). Mr. Tanabe received his B.A. in Law at the University of Tokyo in 1978 and an M.A. in International Relations from Stanford University in 1985. After finishing his law undergraduate degree in 1978, Mr. Tanabe joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI – later reorganized and renamed METI in 2001) where he gained significant experience in the trade policy and the energy and environmental fields. He served in the World Bank, the International Trade Policy Bureau (ITPB), and the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE), Vice President of RIETI in 2004, followed by extensive work in the private sector through various executive positions at Hitachi, Ltd., rising to the position of Senior Vice President and Executive Officer in 2019.
