Ekaterina Zhuravskaya has taken on one of the most complicated topics of our time: fake news. Zhuravskaya and her coauthors wanted to explore why the act of fact-checking didn’t seem to have much effect on the dissemination of political falsehoods.
“Political economics has never been more timely than now,” she says. “The political landscape in many democracies is changing very quickly and we need to understand why.”
In a study that examined the Israeli-Palestine conflict, Ekaterina Zhuravskaya set out to assess the impact that international media has on a military operation. The paper found the Israeli Defense Forces time their attacks strategically based on the U.S. media cycle.
Ekaterina Zhuravskaya is interested in understanding peoples’ beliefs and prejudices towards different ethnic groups and how these can lead to ethnic conflicts or wars.
“Economic competition between a minority and majority often leads to conflict because the majority wants to essentially avoid competition.” "If a minority is specialising in something that is complementary to the occupations of the majority, that should lead to less conflict."
