László Halpern is professor emeritus at the Institute of Economics of the Centre for Economic and Regional Studies (belonging to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences until 2019) in Budapest where he has been working since his graduation from Corvinus (then Karl Marx) University of Budapest in 1974. He is Research Fellow in International Trade and Regional Economics research programme of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (London), recurrent Visiting Professor at the Central European University (Budapest).
He was member of the Research Advisory Committee at the Czech National Bank. He has written widely on exchange rate theory, Central and East European exchange rate policy, macroeconomic stabilisation theory, enterprise behaviour, and international trade. He has participated in numerous international research projects sponsored by the Commission of the European Union.
