Matthias Helble

Senior Economist, Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department at Asian Development Bank

Matthias Helble is a Senior Economist in the Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). His research interests include international trade, health, infrastructure financing, and urban economics. His research has appeared in flagship publications of international organizations as well as in leading scientific journals. He has published ten books, including with Oxford University Press. Before joining ADB in 2018, Matthias was a Senior Economist at the ADB Institute in Tokyo. Prior to moving to Asia, Matthias worked as an economist for the World Bank, the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization and the United Nations. He holds degrees in economics from the University of Tübingen (BA, MSc) in Germany and in development studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Matthias received his PhD degree in international economics from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Switzerland (thesis supervisor: Prof. Richard Baldwin). During his doctoral studies Matthias was a Research Fellow at Yale University.
